How to scan a QR code
Most people can scan a QR code with the camera already built into their phone. If that does not work, the fix is usually about lighting, focus, permissions, or how the QR code was designed.
The fastest way on a phone
- Open the default camera app.
- Point it steadily at the QR code.
- Wait for the banner, card, or link preview to appear.
- Tap the prompt to open the destination.
You usually do not need a separate QR scanner app unless the device is older or the built-in camera flow has been disabled.
If the QR code is inside a photo or screenshot
- Use a browser-based scanner or decoder tool.
- Open the image with a built-in photo app that supports visual detection.
- Try importing the file into a scan tool if live camera scanning is not possible.
This is common when someone sends you a QR code in chat, email, or a document rather than showing it on paper or another screen.
Why scanning sometimes fails
- The code is blurry, too small, or low contrast.
- Screen glare or low light makes focus difficult.
- The camera app lacks permission or QR detection is disabled.
- The code opens a broken or expired destination.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Move closer, then farther away, until the camera finds focus.
- Increase screen brightness or improve room lighting.
- Clean the camera lens.
- Test the same QR code on another phone.
- Verify the destination still works in a browser.
