QR code too small

If your QR code is too small, even a perfectly generated file can fail. Size needs to match both data density and the distance from which people will scan.

Why size matters so much

Scanners need enough camera pixels to distinguish individual modules. As the QR gets smaller, the modules become harder to resolve, especially on older phones, in low light, or when the code is printed on textured material.

More data means more modules, which often means you need a larger final QR code for the same reliability.

Practical size guidance

Use case Suggested minimum Notes
Business card or product tag At least 20-25 mm Use clean contrast and short data payloads.
Flyer or menu 25-35 mm Good for normal hand-held viewing.
Poster or signage 40 mm and up Increase size for longer viewing distance.
Window, booth, or large-format display Based on distance Test from the actual expected scan position.

Symptoms of an undersized QR code

How to fix a QR code that is too small

  1. Increase the physical size of the code.
  2. Reduce unnecessary data or switch to a shorter link.
  3. Use a higher-resolution or vector export.
  4. Keep the quiet zone clear around all four sides.
  5. Retest from the real user distance, not just from your desk.
